Remote/Mountain First Aid Syllabus

Course to be 2-Day – 16 hours

Day one Split into 4 sessions: 2½ hours ⁄ 2 hours ⁄ 1½ hours ⁄ 1½ hours

Short break between Sessions 1 and 2; Sessions 3 and 4; ½ hour lunch break between Sessions 2 and 3;
Plenary after Session 4 [including written test]
Candidates can ask for an amanuensis.

Day two Practical scenarios 8 hours

Session One

  • Principles of First Aid
  • Assessment of casualty/casualties; and immediate and effective action
  • Communication
  • Principles of resuscitation – adult & Child
  • Effective chest compressions and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Drowning and cold water immersion
  • Recovery position
  • Choking
  • Electric shock

Session Two

  • Clinical shock
  • Blood loss
  • Eye injuries
  • Heart attack
  • Anaphylactic shock-Asthma
  • Toxic shock (crush injury and suspension trauma)
  • The control of bleeding (External and Internal)

Session Three

  • Unconscious and conscious casualties
  • Diabetes and epilepsy – awareness of these conditions
  • Head injury (compression and concussion)
  • Burns (Electrical/Rope burns)
  • Hypothermia Mountain & Water
  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Session Four

  • Fractures
  • Casualty handling
  • Spinal injuries
  • Helicopter evacuation / 4x4 vehicle evacuation
  • First Aid kit
  • Miscellaneous injuries and complaints

Plenary

  • Written test, in practice some of the theory will be carried over to day 2

  • Hypothermia (prevention, recognition & treatment)
  • Heat exhaustion and heatstroke
  • Diabetic emergency
  • Cold shock
  • Epilepsy
  • Seasickness

SESSION 4 (1 hour)

  • Fractures
  • Handling casualties (inc. helicopter evacuation)
  • Spinal injuries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Communications

SESSION 5 (Offshore candidates only)

  • Awareness and use of Category C drugs.
